Towns across the state are proposing bans on small liquor bottles called nips. Here in Brookline, elected Town Meeting members will soon decide whether or not to enforce a needless ban – but small bottle bans won’t solve the litter problem.
Instead, local businesses will be severely hurt. Bans like this one will only drive consumers across town and state borders to buy small bottles from another store – shifting profits away from our communities.
And nips are not the problem. On the road alongside those small bottles you’ll also see lottery tickets, cigarette butts, coffee cups, and food wrappers. We need to come together to develop real solutions to make our streets cleaner, instead of focusing on one-off bans that damage our economy.
